Just How Important is Engagement on Social Media? – Marketing And Growth Hacking
Just How Important is Engagement on Social Media?
Every day you see people on your news feeds and timelines replying back and forth with each other. Is this a big ole waste of time or is it worth it?
It depends what you’re doing it for. If you’re replying to people’s tweets and leaving negative comments, then this is the wrong way to do it.
If you’re leaving thoughtful comments and showing that you genuinely care about what the other person says, then you’re doing it right.
There is a mighty big difference between showing that you care and showing that you don’t. Take the road of genuineness and leave a positive impact on people’s social media posts.
All it takes is a minute or 2 for each post to leave a positive message. For example, on Medium, take the time to read people’s stories and respond saying something you liked about it or just add your 2 cents.
Take the time to become apart of the community. Immerse yourself in your desired community and work your way up to eventually become an influencer of sorts.
About a month ago, my roommate, who is big into Fortnite, started streaming on Twitch (link to his channel).
He needs 50 followers in order to become a Twitch affiliate. As you can imagine, he is all jazzed up to reach that milestone.
He is 2 followers away as of this story. He has been promoting it on all of his social media accounts which has been proven successful.
The other night I suggested that he go on Instagram and find hashtags related to Fortnite. This strategy comes straight from the man himself — Gary Vaynerchuk. It’s called the $1.80 strategy for those of you that aren’t familiar with it.
The basic idea behind this strategy is to find 10 different hashtags related to something you’re interested in, find 9 posts that catch your eye under each hashtag and leave a thoughtful comment. That’s all it is. Leaving your 2 cents on 90 posts equals $1.80.
So, in the case of my roommate, he has been implementing this strategy. He has probably done this for a total of an hour since he started. He has grown his Twitch following by 4 or so followers in the span of that 1 hour simply by interacting with a community that he has interest in.
Genuinely showing that you care goes a long way.
Oh, and one more thing. Don’t be one of those people that ask for something when doing this strategy. Don’t ask for a follow or anything like that. Leave your 2 cents and watch your following slowly, but surely grow with people in your community.
You’re new to the social media game and you just created your Instagram account.
You’re eager to start growing your following, so you start doing some research as to how to accomplish that goal. You come across this strategy and decide to give it a shot.
You have a keen interest in fitness. You search fitness related hashtags on Instagram and find the ones that appeal to you.
You start with the hashtag fitness which has over 259 million posts. You find the section that has the most recent posts and start commenting on people’s pictures and videos — leaving genuine comments.
It’s been 30 days since you started utilizing this strategy. It’s been going pretty well for you, gaining roughly 4 real followers a day after leaving about 100 comments for 100 different people.
Day 57 arrives, and you’re still going strong. You’re doing your usual 100 comments, usually getting about 30 responses back thanking you for your comment.
One person starts following you with a blue check mark so you check out their profile.
When you arrive at their profile, you read their bio and find out they’re a personal trainer who operates multiple gyms. And maybe the best thing about all of this is the fact that this person has over 300,000 followers.
2 weeks pass and you just posted a new video of you giving tips on some of your favorite leg workouts. A few hours after that post being public, that same personal trainer reaches out to you via direct message.
They saw your recent post and loved it. The reason for the DM is because they want to see if you’re interested in partnering up and creating a video together showing off both of your favorite workouts.
A month passes and the video is public. You post it on your channel and they post it on theirs (of course they tagged you).
Just like that, you’re exposed to over 300,000 other people who have an interest in fitness.
Of those 300,000 or so people, 6,500 follow you, making this strategy extremely worthwhile. So, you decide to continue on with this strategy since you saw extreme success. And the success only continues from there.
Things like this are extremely possible. All it takes is one person to like what they’re seeing from you and then you take off from there, forever changing your life.
I hope the imagine this scenario gave you some ideas as to how you can approach social media engagement. My suggestion is to give this strategy a shot. It may be the key to your future success!
