Do you remember Wendy’s having an online digital presence five years ago?
Yeah, me neither. It was virtually (see what I did there?) non-existent until 2011 when Brandon Rhoten joined as vice president of digital and social media. Under his guidance, Wendy’s partnered with agencies and entered the digital world on platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr. Fast food hasn’t done so well in its marketing efforts, particularly as Americans are becoming more health conscious.
With the rise of social media, visual content is so important. Unlike fine dining where the food is carefully plated to be aesthetically beautiful and pleasing to photograph, fast food is a different realm. It’s easy to see why we take and share photos when dining in high-class establishments. When we think of fast-food, we may think of quickly put together, greasy but nonetheless tasty food. Photogenic and fast food are seldom used in the same sentence.
Wendy’s has been more successful than other fast food establishments online because they know how to leverage content on the various online content platforms.
They respect the medium
Wendy’s is interacting with their consumers on every platform that they use. More importantly, they’re interacting in the right way on the right platform. Native advertising is an important part of the brand’s social media strategy. Every medium has its own set of rules and Wendy’s has got it down in doing exactly what they need to in the specific medium. They use Twitter for timely themed tweets and quick responses catching on to trending hashtags like #NationalFastFoodDay or holidays like Halloween.
Instagram is for beautifully curated photos. Their color scheme is bright, warm and clean– not exactly what we would expect from a fast food joint. They pay careful attention in creating artistic photos both in the restaurant and outside that highlight Wendy’s menu items. They even have a Tumblr account where they post relevant gifs and internet memes.
Speak the audience’s language
If you read Wendy’s posts, it’s almost as if you’re talking to a friend.
Wendy’s understands and uses the lingo that their target customers use. CEO Emil Brolick stated that Wendy’s is “mindful of the importance of gaining traction with Millennials” and therefore has been putting more digital marketing efforts into appealing to the Millennial generation. They crafted their online voice to be approachable, fun and slightly sassy. It’s inviting and non-threatening, turning customers into friends.
Even when approaching negative feedback, Wendy’s handles it swiftly and with gusto.
Keep up the conversation
The beauty of social media platforms is that it allows actions online to become more interactive. Followers are not just passive receivers of online content and can respond to the content creating a conversation. Wendy’s uses their visual content to engage their followers and ask them brand-relevant questions. On Facebook, Wendy’s asked their fans “If you could only get one topping on your cheeseburger for the rest of your life, what would it be?” and created a pie-chart out of the actual toppings to show the results.
This was relatively low effort on Wendy’s part but performed well with high social engagement and shares.
Quality is their recipe
The brand currently has 815,000 Twitter followers, more than 7.7 million Facebook likes, 139,000 Instagram followers and growing.
What’s their secret sauce? Wendy’s is not only super engaged on social media but creates quality content for these outlets. The secret to keeping the quality of their social content is they let their customers lead the conversation and determine what they should do next.

FROSTBURG — Students at Frostburg State University are managing social media marketing campaigns for award-winning musicians thanks to an internship program created by bluegrass musician Del McCoury’s team at Rainmaker Music Management.
“I always wanted an internship within the music industry,” Demetrius Farley, an FSU senior in mass communications with a focus in audio production, said. “So this is pretty much like the golden ticket.”
Farley is one of seven FSU students selected to participate in the first ever five-month-long internship, who had the chance to meet for the first time at the school Friday with program founders Del McCoury, Stan Strickland of Rainmaker Music Management, headquartered in Tampa, Florida, and musician Dre Anders of Dre and the Collective.
Strickland said he was impressed by the first group of students.
“Look at the respect that they have,” Strickland said. “They came in here well-dressed. They recognize the opportunity.”
An opportunity to land one of the most sought after positions in the industry, Strickland said.
“We are so excited about this program because there is such a need for social media marketing positions,” he said. “We wish there were 70 of you.
“And those of you that really hustle, will be offered jobs, because we need people,” he added.
Strickland said social media marketing campaigns are essential for musicians to grow and maintain an audience since most fans download or livestream their favorite music.
“As streaming has become more important, it shrinks the revenue stream for record companies,” he said.
“The way (publicists) used to market records has all changed, so they are completely dependent on social media marketing teams to get the word out about any new artist.”
Right now, students are working on strengthening the DelFest YouTube Channel.
The self-uploading music video site has become the number source for music, said Strickland, who hopes by gathering video footage of McCoury and re-releasing it as a DelFest YouTube channel, a stronger community will grow around the bluegrass great.
“Del has 10 years of high definition, multi-camera footage from the festival,” Strickland said.
“So whoever it is that loves Del, they are all going to come in to this one community.”
According to Strickland, two of the current interns have already made an impression on Rainmaker’s staff, with possible job offers at the Florida location post program completion.
But if moving to Florida after graduation just isn’t an option, don’t fret. Strickland said he’s looking for property to house a social media marketing business in downtown Cumberland.
“Del and I are looking at real estate here,” Strickland said, “and what we would like to see, if I could give you business snapshot, I’d like to see 40 or 50 people working at a downtown location two years from now, doing nothing but social media marketing for festivals, touring musicians and record companies.”

Now that Facebook is reducing the visibility of brand page content in users’ news feed, basically to zero, social media marketers are retooling their strategies for garnering engagement. Brands that have not relied on organic reach in Facebook and Instagram will not likely see any changes this year. Those who do will need to take a serious look at other options.
Here are a few social media marketing ideas brands can use to stay top of mind with their target audiences:
Pay (more) to Play
Facebook utilizes a bidding method to deliver advertisements. Driving more advertisers to the bidding war will inevitably increase the costs of winning. Brands that have not advertised before, are likely to start now. For teams who already submitted their 2018 ad budgets based on last year’s numbers, this might result in reduced performance.
Brands are going to have to be smarter about their ad content and who they target with it in order to keep prices from sky rocketing. Facebook has a new campaign feature that is supposed to help auto-optimize better performing ads, which should save time for those managing large-scale campaigns. This Test and Learn feature might be worth trying out.
Tracx supports boosting and targeting Facebook posts within the platform. Click here to learn more.
What Old is New (again)
If Facebook prioritizes trusted news sources and emphasizes local news, getting a brand mention in a local news story shared on Facebook will help brand exposure. While this will not impact engagement numbers, brands should be ready to target/retarget these readers after the story is published.
The focus on “people to people” engagement on Facebook will also make influencer content more likely to have higher reach than brand posts. Brands not already working with influencers are likely to reach out this year to activate a program.
Some influencers self-report their content performance. Having a social media monitoring tool like Tracx will help keep those reports accountable.
Live Video & Stories
Facebook is a big believer in video being the future of social media. Their creation of “Watch” is one indication of this. Since its launch in 2016, Facebook Live video has been given a higher priority in the news feed, regardless of what type of page it comes from. Live video will continue to see organic reach and engagement well into 2018 – the same goes for Instagram Stories. However, now that more brands know this, the Stories content will have to evolve as well, becoming more creative and edgier, and less likely to rely on gimmicky tricks with boomerangs and filters.
Be Your Own News
Facebook has figured out that people are more likely to engage with informative content. Brands should take a cue from this and publish content about their products or industry that offer information and not just a hard sell. This idea isn’t new to brands like John Deer, American Express or Patagonia, which have been creating informative articles and videos for years.
Beauty bloggers are some of the best examples of this type of informative content expressed in a tutorial format. Perhaps this is why their content has some of the highest reach and engagement numbers in social media. These folks have taken the time to figure something out and then show fans how to do the same. They save fans time, frustration and occasionally money. If there is one thing fans seem to be short on these days, it is time.
In Tracx, content can be tagged and filtered by type, which allows for analyzing post performance by video to be done more easily and fairly.
The Override Button
While this Facebook feature isn’t new, not all brands have taken full advantage of it yet. There is a way users can tell Facebook that they want to see posts from brand pages, even if they don’t get boosted. Fans can click on the Follow/Following icon from the mobile app and be taken to a screen where they can click on another icon that says “See First.” These two extra steps will override the new algorithm rolling out this year, and keep organic content flowing into fans’ news feeds.
Change settings in Facebook to prioritize organic posts.
Social Media Marketing World 2017 is the must-attend Social Media Conference Event of the year.
I’m coming at you with 7 Reasons Why you should put Social Media Marketing World at the top of your Digital Marketing Conference “must-attend” lists.
…and two ways that you can attend Social Media Marketing World.
Social Media Marketing World 2018 will be the 6th Year of the event. It will be my 6th year attending and the 5th time I will speak at this event.
I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of (in my opinion) the best Social Media Conference in the World.

After watching that video, I may not need to convince you of why you should attend (because I know you want to).
But first, I wanted to share two ways you CAN attend.- tickets for Social Media Marketing World 2017 are rising between now and the event so the sooner you jump the more discounted the tickets are:
2 Ways to Attend Social Media Marketing World
1 Buy a Ticket, Jump on a Plane and DO IT!
This is my first recommendation. Just do it. Grab the chance to attend the event and buy your ticket here.
You’ll get access to all the 120+ sessions live and access to the virtual pass for later.
Many brands and small business owners who have attended have seen massive growth in their business through marketing practices they have implemented after attending.
I know countless people who have had huge opportunities arise from the amazing networking opportunities.
More of that later, but first, if you can’t wait, and you are doing a happy dance already, click this link and grab your ticket.

The quality of the presentations is amazing – you’ll always go away with something to take action on. From blogging to live streaming to podcasting to video and all the social media platforms – you can hone in on your areas of interest or need and learn what you need to learn.
And if you miss it there’s always the virtual pass!

There’s also a mix of keynote sessions and workshops, so if you are someone who wants to jump in and go deeper on a topic, book in for a workshop (at no extra cost).
But don’t take my word for how awesome the speakers are – listen to what they say about the event.
In this video, you’ll hear just how much they love it (including my interview at the 2016 event) and why it’s a great place to meet and network with industry leaders:
2 Network like a BOSS
Social Media Marketing World is one of the best social media marketing conferences I know for solidifying real relationships from those you have made online.
You’ll literally have the opportunity to network like a boss if that is the way you roll.
In fact, this digital marketing conference has been set up to cater for plenty of networking time. It’s woven throughout the 3 days – at parties, between sessions, breakout room… whatever your style is (even if you are an introvert) this conference is set up to cater for you and ensure you meet the right people to help your business grow.
3 Meet the World’s Top Social Media Marketing Experts

The speakers don’t just speak and run. They stay and play and they’ll interact with you (come and chat with me!).
I guarantee you that you’ll be blown away by how approachable the speakers are. I’ve seen speakers miss lunch because they stop and chat so much on their way to the food.
*Side Note: If you chat with me at lunchtime, let’s walk in the general direction of the food, picking up anyone else who wants to come along…so nobody goes hungry!
4 The Virtual Ticket has Got Your Back
As I said above, if you attend Social Media Marketing World 2017 you’ll also get the Virtual Pass!
So if you miss a session, you can relax, because the virtual pass has you covered.

5 It’s Bloody Fun!
Social Media Marketing World 2017 is going to be bloody fun? How do I know? Because every year it is!
I know that I sound a little Australian by saying so, but trust me, this is a FUN event.
And that’s not just because of the number of Australian’s that make the long haul flight. Oh yes, we do.
So… yo, listen up, if we Aussies can make the long haul flight, you sure as heck can handle a short one, ok?
But seriously, from the first night, the constant chatter, networking, amazing presentations and buzz will excite you.
And the opening night party on the Midway is one of the highlights for sure!
I mean, where else can you ride an aircraft simulator at a social media conference? Just avoid riding with me… I went on a mission inside one of these with Zach from Canva and we spent a lot of time upside down.
6 San Diego
Let’s not kid ourselves.. the location has a HUGE impact on whether you want to attend an event somewhere, right?
Well, when it comes to location, San Diego is one of my favourite places in the world.
Social Media Marketing World 2017 is being held in San Diego for the 5th year and I think it is here to stay… but you never know.
Why not make this year the year you’ll attend?
From the San Diego Beaches to the OMG Sunsets and the beautiful restaurants and bars just a walk away in the Gaslamp Quarter (or along the harbour)… what more could you want.
Bring the kids, go to Legoland, visit the Zoo… my kids loved it when they came with us a few years ago.
I mean seriously, check this video out….. could this city BE any more perfect?
Oh, and the days are sunny in March!
7 First Class Conference Experience
Social Media Marketing World 2017 will be a digital conference like no other. Every year this conference gets better. Make sure you are there.
Every year this conference gets better. Make sure you are there. The Social Media Examiner team pull out no stops to make you feel welcome and there’s a team member at (seemingly) ever corner to help you get what you need.
The Social Media Examiner team pull out no stops to make you feel welcome and there’s a team member at (seemingly) ever corner to help you get what you need.
